You Are What You Eat

Every day in our veterinary practice, I am asked multiple times, “Doc, what should my dog/cat eat?” And I respond with that dreaded vague answer, “Well, it depends.” And it does. There is no one-size-fits-all prescription for pet diets, but hopefully I can give you some food for thought. The questions and controversy surrounding the pet food industry are unprecedented. The recent pet food recalls have caused many owners to doubt the safety of commercial pet foods entirely. The good news to be found amid such tragedy is that it has led to a heightened awareness and closer monitoring, which should lessen the likelihood of future such incidents. Feel free to ask your vet for his or her specific recommendations, or if there are certain food types that should be avoided based on your pet’s history.
